COR (the Certification of Recognition program) is implemented by the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) and recognizes and rewards employers which are committed to workplace safety.
In order to become eligible for certification, the employer must meet a strict set of safety guidelines and implement a Corporate Health & Safety Program. The Health & Safety Program and the company are then rigorously examined by an authorized COR Auditor, in order for the company to be considered COR certified, with annual audits conducted thereafter to ensure the maintenance and improvement of the program.
The purpose of the COR program is to create a corporate culture of safety for companies, particularly those in high risk industries. The concept is that if there is a culture of safety, then workers are less likely to engage in unsafe work practices and more likely to recognize hazards, preventing injury. The incentive for employers is to minimize injuries, lost time and loss of property, while receiving deductions on their WorkSafe BC assessment.
According to WorkSafe BC, in 2011 over 141,000 injuries were reported, of which 190 were fatalities – a majority of which were preventable. It is important that everyone be held to higher standards of safety for themselves, their coworker and their employees and the COR certification program is aimed at doing just that.
